O artigo, partindo da importância que os acervos manuscritos e bibliográficos têm para a pesquisa filológica, trata das relações que se podem estabelecer entre o pesquisador e as diversas disposições tomadas quanto ao destino dos acervos. Nele se faz uma exposição sobre os vários tipos de acervos que podem ser constituídos, com exemplos que situam historicamente diferentes situações. São apresentados alguns casos de criação e atuação de instituições na área da guarda de documentos e de sua pesquisa. Aborda ainda o papel desempenhado pelos diversos especialistas na constituição dos dossiês de escritores, bem como a necessidade de as instituições reconhecerem as especificidades do trabalho de pesquisa nessa área.

Starting from the importance that manuscript and book collections have for philological research, this article analyzes the relationships between the researcher and the several decisions which were taken regarding the collection’s fate. It describes the various kinds of collections which can be created, with examples that locate historically different situations. It studies the creation and performance of some institutions dedicated to keeping and researching documents. It also focusses on the role of the several experts in the constitution of writers’ dossiers, as well as on the importance that institutions ackowledge the specificities of research work in this area.
