Aimé-Adrien Taunay e os registros dos índios Bororo

Uma expressão simbólica muito utilizada pelas sociedades indígenas é a pintura corporal. Tomando seus corpos como suporte, os índios costumam cobrir a pele com linhas coloridas, demarcando assim sua identidade étnica. Esses ornamentos chamaram a atenção das expedições científicas, cujos artistas os reproduziam em suas cadernetas de anotações. De fato, conservam-se muitos desenhos de naturalistas, com representações de corpos indígenas com ornamentos e demais adereços; para muitas nações, tais registros constituem hoje raros testemunhos da sua história. Neste artigo, toma-se como suporte um conjunto de imagens de índios Bororo, realizado por Aimé-Adrien Taunay, que esteve no Brasil na primeira metade do século XIX. Pretende-se observar como esse artista conseguiu apreender os signos étnicos e culturais contidos no corpo dos indígenas que representou e se esses signos respondem ao universo cultural da sociedade Bororo.

Body painting is a symbolic expression widely used in indigenous societies. Using their bodies as canvases, indigenous peoples cover their skin with colorful lines, in this way establishing their ethnic identities. These adornments attracted the attention of scientific expeditions and the artists of these expeditions reproduced these images in their notebooks. In fact, there are still many drawings by naturalists that show indigenous individuals with painted bodies and typical accessories; for many nations, these records are now a rare testimony of their history. This article is based on a collection of drawings of the Bororo Indians made by Aimé-Adrien Taunay, who travelled in Brazil during the first half of the 19th century. The aim of this study is to show how this artist managed to capture the ethnic and cultural symbols of the natives he drew, and to investigate if these symbols are part of the cultural universe of the Bororo society.
