As práticas escriturárias que formalizaram os primeiros discursos que compõem o corpus textual da história da encadernação evidenciam a instabilidade dos estatutos simbólicos atribuídos aos documentos gráficos e a seus modos de produção e salvaguarda, nas suas dimensões textuais e materiais. Tais práticas de escrita, constituídas sob o signo do artesanato e do iletrismo, marcaram uma forte distinção hierárquica entre prática e teoria, consolidando discursos e representações socioprofissionais que migraram para o universo da Conservação-Restauração de acervos bibliográficos. Dessa forma, além de analisar, por meio de documentos e estudos de caso, as origens dessa herança socioprofissional, o presente artigo discutirá a maneira como a tensão entre materialidade e textualidade se manifesta nas abordagens clássicas da teoria da restauração.

The writing practices that were responsible to formalize the first discourses comprising the textual corpus of the bookbinding history can clearly demonstrate the instability of the symbolic rules attributed to the graphic documents and their methods for production or protection, involving both textual and material aspects. These writing usages, built under the sign of the handicraft and of the illiteracy, marked a strong distinction between practice and theory, consolidating discourses and socio-professional representations that migrated to the field of the conservation-restoration of bibliographic collections. Hence, in addition to analysing the origins of this socio-professional heritage through documents and case studies, this paper will discuss how this tension between materiality and textual aspects is manifested in the classical approaches of the restoration theory.
