Na Belém da belle époque da borracha (1890-1910): dirigindo os olhares

Este artigo procura retrabalhar as formas de representação da chamada belle époque em Belém do Pará na passagem do século XIX para o XX, ou seja, no momento de maior expressão da economia da borracha amazônica. Busca-se, assim, discutir o processo social e cultural experimentado pela Belém de então, fundado, segundo seus entes sociais, nas conquistas do Progresso e da Civilização. Esse processo, sustentado pela mundialização da cultura, não produziu tão somente uma figuração mimética da metáfora encarnada por Paris. Os quadros sociais e intelectuais da Belém da belle époque abrigaram mediações, daí resultando um contexto em que a apropriação da cultura mundializada pelos entes sociais de Belém produziu, em última análise, uma releitura da identidade matricial da belle époque propriamente dita.

This article intends to rework the forms of representation of the so-called belleépoque in Belém, Brazil, in the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, at the peakof the Amazonian rubber economy. It also intends to discuss the social and culturalprocess experienced in Belém at the time, based on what was socially perceivedas the achievements of Progress and Civilization. This process, foundedin the globalization of culture, was not limited to a mimetic transfiguration of the metaphor represented by Paris. Belém’s social and intellectual groups in the belle époque produced mediations which led to an appropriation of that globalized culture that ultimately produced a rereading of the identity matrix of the belle époque itself.
