A pesquisa deste trabalho focalizou período imperial brasileiro, durante o reinado de dom Pedro II, com ênfase entre os anos de 1850 e 1888 e sob o recorte espacial da província do Rio de Janeiro. A proposta é caracterizar o envolvimento da Maçonaria brasileira com as manifestações escravas no processo de emancipação da escravidão através da participação de membros da confraria na organização política. Foram analisados os diferentes objetivos que tinham os indivíduos e grupos que lutaram pela libertação dos escravos, em especial os maçons, salientando também as crises que ocorriam entre as elites e como essas crises eram aproveitadas pelos escravos com intuito de negociar melhorias para suas vidas.

The research for this article focused on Imperial Brazil, during the reign of dom Pedro II, emphasizing the years between 1850 and 1888, and the province of Rio de Janeiro. The purpose is to characterize the involvement of Brazilian Freemasonry with the demonstrations by slaves in the emancipation process. Such involvement is especially evident when the participation of members of the brotherhood in the political organization is considered. The different objectives of individuals and groups (in particular those of the Freemasons) that fought for the liberation of slaves have been analyzed. Crises that occurred between the elites and how these crises were used by slaves to negotiate improvements to their lives have also been highlighted here.
