O artigo analisa o comportamento do mais importante jornal italiano publicado no Brasil – verdadeiro órgão oficioso da comunidade italiana – durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial e o seu esforço para mobilizar os italianos residentes no país, empurrando os homens em idade de alistamento e os reservistas para a frente de batalha; incentivando e organizando a coleta de fundos destinados aos combatentes e à Itália; sustentando o Comitato Pro Patria, criado por iniciativa das autoridades diplomáticas e da elite econômica e intelectual imigrada; alimentando ritos patrióticos de massa; publicando cartas de soldados e oficiais que partiram do Brasil para dar sua contribuição às operações bélicas; e também criticando a desorganização dos consulados, a confusão das diretrizes provenientes de Roma e a exiguidade de auxílios concedidos às famílias dos que embarcaram para responder ao apelo patriótico.

This paper analyzes the behavior of the most important Italian newspaper published in Brazil – actually, the Italian community unofficial organ – during World War I, and its effort to mobilize the Italian residents in the country. This mobilization can be seen in its effort to push the men (in age of leverage and reservists) to the front; to raise funds for the fighters and for Italy itself; to support the Pro Patria Committee, an institution which arose by initiative of diplomatic authorities and the immigrant social and economic elite; to fuel mass patriotic rituals; and to publish letters from soldiers and officers who had left Brazil to join the army. At the same time, it criticized the consular disorganization, the messy directives from Rome and the reduced amount paid to the families of those who embarked in order to respond to the call of the motherland.
